A ginger pelt sat motionless on the bank of a creek. His tail was twisted up in an emotion that he could not yet detect. He hated badgers and wished that they would go away for ever. The young apprentice know other than Foxpaw let out a sigh and then wondered where his mentor was. Foxpaw trotted over to a bramble bush and scented the air by parting his jaws and letting the scnet of earth and prey hit the top of his mouth. Vole! Foxpaw instantly dropped into the hunters crouch and narrowed his eyes. He stalked around the bush until he was standing motionless behind the small body of a vole. The plump fat creature was nibbling on a hazelnut and seemed not to notice they ginger tom behind it. Foxpaw crept forward until he was a fox~length away, he measured his distance and pushed his powerful hin quarters. He landed squarely on the vole and killed it instantly with a blow to the head. Foxpaw then dragged it out of the shadows of the bramble thicket and stalked over to a hazel bush. Foxpaw crawled into the safe shadows of the thicket and felt the coolness of it's shade.

((You don't know the hunters crouch yet.))
She padded out of the ShadowClan camp, only to see her apprentice padding deeper into the trees. She kept a close eye on him, to see where he was going. He should know he isn't allowed to go out of camp without a warrior. She crept along, following him for what seemed like hours, but it was just minutes. The apprentice was moving very slow! Then he stopped and cought a vole! She decided this was the time to show herself. Jumping from shadow to shadow, she was never heard. Then she meowed," Lucky catch. You must of seen some of the warriors train older apprentices how to do the hunters crouch. You do know your not allowed to go out of camp without a warrior, no?" She let out a mrrrr of amusement then mewing," Oh, and everything you catch must go to the elders before you eat, so don't even think about eating that." This time she was stern, to make the apprentice remember that. " The warrior code says The clan must always be fed before yourself," she hissed, narrowing her forest green eyes until they were just a small slit of black.

Foxpaw knodded his ginger head and stepped out of the shadows. He pushed the vole over to a sandy spot and then scraped dirt over it's lifeless body. "Could you help me with my hunters crouch first, because I felt a little off balance," Foxpaw admitted embarissingly. Then he silentlly padded over to Spottedfire and sat down beside her. "Me and siblings used to practice," Foxpaw meowed as drew his soft pink tongue over his fluffy ginger paw. Then he narrowed his eyes at a thought that nagged stubbornly in his mind. "I hate badgers," Foxpaw hissed under his breath.

Amusement swept over her when the young tom said that. "Of course I will, that's what I'm for ya know," she meowed. She liked this apprentices attudiute to try to learn to hunt. "Okay, since we are ShadowClan warriors, we mostly hunt at night, or on cloudy days. But today is sunny, but these pine trees help keep shadows. We must stick to the shadows because of our ginger pelts. You got that?" she asked him. She loved teaching apprentices. He is going to be a great hunter one day. At the mention of badgers she hissed," Me too, but don't talk about that. You are learning how to be a warrior, tomorrow I will show you the territory."

"Yay,"Foxpaw hissed and then he slid his muscles into place. Foxpaw crouched down into somewhat of a hunters crouch and stalked forward. But, he let his tail slide to low and it scraped a thorn bush. Next thing Foxpaw knew he was fighting the thorn bush for the life of his tail. Once he got his tail out he spit continuesly at the thornbush. "I hate thorns,"Foxpaw hissed angerly. His fur was fluffed out and the tom looked half his size. He flexed his claws and c;awed the ground. Then he narrowed his eyes and tried the crouch agian. This time he got it almost right but he held his tail up a little to high. Foxpaw glanced back at Spottedfire and couldn't help notice the clumps of ginger fur still clinging to the thorn bush.

She let out a mrrr of amusement when he got his ginger tail stuck into a thorn bush. "Hold your tail up higher, but not to high. Remember, stick to the shadows," she meowed. '' Here, get into the position I'm in." She dropped slowly into the crouch. Then, without waiting on Foxpaw, she heard a noise sccribling in the undergrowth. She padded towards the sound slowly, sticking to the shadows. She crouched lower, and then she saw the mouse nibbling on a tiny seed in between his paws. It was a field mouse, plump and fat. Brown too. She stalked foward, heading towards it leaping silenty from shadow to shadow. Then she pounced, landing on it and killing it off with a swift blow o the neck with her paw. She padded back to her apprentice and mewed," See, thats how you do it."

Without replying Foxpaw leapt into the hunters crouch. His ears were perked forward in and eager position and his tail was sticking straight out behind him, not to low and not to high. Foxpaw then scented the air and a largeish shrew slowly crawled out from under a leaf and scurried into the open. Foxpaw silently crept over into the shadows and watched the shrews every move with pricked and alert ears. Silently he moved to another shadow hoping for more protection. Then all of a sudden the shrew stiffened and turned towards Foxpaw. Foxpaws muscle's stiffened. Then the shrew shot of and Foxpaw shot after it leaping from shadow to shadow like Spottedfire had done. Once the shrew was about to flee down a hole Foxpaw lunged at his claws unsheathed and his paws outstretched. The shrew tried to squiel but Foxpaw killed it before it could warn the other creatures.

As she saw the shrew look at him, she mumbled to herself," The wind changed." But as he ran after it, she thought he wasn't going to catch it. As she saw it head for a hole, Foxpaw caught it and she meowed," Great catch, at first I thought you wern't going to catch it." She felt a sence of pride dart off the apprentice. "That's enough for today, I'm starving. Tommorrow we will be exploring the territory. You just keep practicing that hunters crouch." She turned towards where her catch was buried, picked it up by the tail, and headed back to camp.

Foxpaw glowed with pride as his mentor prasied him. He trotted over to where he had buried his vole, he unburied it and headed after his mentor with his freshkill clamped in his jaws.
